When the radio crackles and the wind picks up, Bubu gathers Samy and Bela close. A big wind is near, but Bubu just smiles. We know what to do here. Come on, little helpers. There's nothing to fear.
Three stories, one small book. The Big Wind, when the whole family packs the box together: a torch, a radio, water, biscuits, a first-aid kit, and one cheeky hen who packs herself. When the Ground Grumbles, mid-giggle and mid-play, and everybody goes DROP, COVER, HOLD ON under the table while Chicky wears a coconut for a helmet. Walking Safe, from the footpath to the crossing to the smoke in the kitchen, where we crawl LOW, shout FIRE, and never, ever go back inside.
Bubu never panics. Neither should we. I'm ready, I'm clever, I'm brave and I'm strong.
After every story there is a checklist a child can practise like a game. Can you pack the box in five minutes? Can you DROP, COVER and HOLD ON before Bubu counts to three? There is a page for your family's own emergency numbers, filled in together and kept. A pledge to say out loud. And a page for grown-ups, because the best emergency plan is the one a family has actually rehearsed.
For any child who has been told to be careful without ever being shown how, this is the showing. And for a Pacific child, it is their own village, their own grandmother, their own weather.
